Ashani Shalika Ranasinghe finished reading for her Bachelor of Arts at Kelaniya University in 2000. German, Japanese and Fine Arts were her main subjects. In 2005 she read her Masters of Arts in Linguistics from the Faculty of Linguistics, Kelaniya University. Ashani has been working as a lecturer for German language at the University of Kelaniya since 2000. She is primarily responsible for teaching components of German literature from medieval Germany to contemporary German literature and social history in Germany and German-speaking countries. Since 2009, she has been working as a resource person for the National Institute of Education Sri Lanka to prepare the advanced German curriculum, the teaching manual for the German language, and teaching material for advanced level students. She also conducts seminars for school teachers. Since 2006, she has been translating novels, short stories and children's stories, mainly from German. She translated "Das Parfum" by Patrick Süskind, "Sarahs Schlüssel" by Tatiana de Rosnay and "Emma and I" by Sheila Hocken. She also translated two short stories for children and selected short stories by Wolfgang Borchert. Ashani published a book about witches in the Middle Ages. She takes part in literature discussions organized by some book readers clubs in Sri Lanka. She was involved in the Merck Social Translating Project, which was organized by the Goethe Institute Seoul. In the framework of this project she translated the novel “The World at Your Back” by Thomas Melle.
