Ester Tapia

Ester Tapia, born on May 24, 1957  is a recipient of the Unyon ng Mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (Writers union of the Philippines) Gawad Balagtas Award for Cebuano Poetry in 2019, and a national award for Cebuano poetry from the Gawad Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (Commission of Philippine Languages) in 2007.
Her published books include Duhawit, 2018, Sinug-ang (1998), and Ikaduhang Haon( 2021).  Her works appeared in, among others, numerous collections and anthologies such as Versus, Philippine Protest Poetry 1983-1986,   Ani, 1991, Jose 1987; Mantala, 1990s;  Sugbuanong Balak, An Anthology of Cebuano Literature, 1990;  Sugbuanong Sugilanon, 1940-1998, 2006; Centering Voices, 1995;  Panulaang Cebuano, 1999, Fern Garden, 1998;  Habit of Shore, 1999; Babayeng Sugid, 2011;  Kapulongan, 2008; Brown Child, 2013. Her poems also regularly appeared in literary magazines in English and Cebuano. Ester Tapia’s poems are used in textbooks in different college and universities in the country. She has also participated in and served as panelist of various writers workshops organized by literary groups in the country.
Another book scheduled for publication this year is the collection of her Cebuano poetry translated into English by eminent writer and Professor Emeritus of the University of the Philippines, Merlie Alunan Wenceslao.  
Her other passion is the translation of literary texts in Cebuano and English. Her cultural advocacy is to promote the development of Cebuano or Bisaya literature - Cebuano being the language at birth by majority of the Filipinos. 
She is an urban development planner by profession and has worked in the Philippines, Nepal, and Germany. She is married and has 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
