Dr Rebecca DeWald
Dr Rebecca DeWald is a bilingual translator with a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Glasgow, working with English, German, French and Spanish into German and English. Her recent monograph Possible Worlds: Jorge Luis Borges’s (Pseudo-)Translations of Virginia Woolf and Franz Kafka (IMLR books, 2020) questions the maintenance of a strict distinction between original works and translations. She coordinates the Emerging Translator Mentorships Programme at the National Centre for Writing in Norwich, UK and runs the monthly Translators’ Stammtisch and Translation Theory Lab at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow. As a translator, editor and reviewer, Rebecca regularly contributes to the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History, the German Historical Institute Washington, D.C., PEN Translates, New Books in German, and Reading in Translation. She sits on the assessment panel for Publishing Scotland’s Translation Fund, co-runs Kalewater Cottage Creative Retreat in the Scottish Borders, and currently serves as co-chair of the Society of Authors’ Translators Association Committee. Recent and forthcoming translations include New Rituals/Neue Rituale edited by Oktavia Schreiner (2021), Bespoke Men’s Shoes by Bernhard Roetzel (forthcoming with Ullmann Medien), Tracking the Elephants (extract) by Peter Karoshi (2021) and Secret Cities: Italy by Thomas Migge (forthcoming with Schiffer Books). Rebecca lives in Glasgow, Scotland.
