A diplomat loses faith in diplomacy. And the trait most relevant for her job: her patience.
Following her bestseller Daughters , Lucy Fricke's new novel stars Friederike Aldermann, an experienced and ambitious German diplomat. A woman who is not easily upset or shaken by anything, everywhere and nowhere at home. But then, in Montevideo of all places, she fails for the first time in her career. After a brief, involuntary time-out at home, she is transferred to politically heated Istanbul, her biggest challenge yet. Between the city’s Palace of Justice and the consul’s summer residence, the secret service and dissident circles, a steamy affair and loneliness, she comes up against the limits of friendship, the rule of law, and the European idea.
With her signature mix of dry humor, strong and witty dialogues, and a great sense of detail, Lucy Fricke delivers another brilliant and very satisfying reading experience. Deservedly she is hailed as one of the leading female voices on the German literary scene.
"Lucy Fricke has (...) succeeded in writing a book that is both topical and clever. In a lively and true-to-life language. With a story that is both pensive and sorrowful, and therefore full of power." Former Secretary of State Heiko Maas in Die Zeit
“Throughout, the novel demonstrates the narrative talent of Lucy Fricke, who lived in Istanbul for several months herself. The bestselling author convinces with concise dialogues and trenchant characters.” Jeanette Schäfer, FAZ
“A thrilling, a revealing and entertaining novel with a sensational finale.” Katja Weise, NDR Kultur
