Australian Toni Pollard had a 38-year career as a teacher of Indonesian language, both at high school and university level. On her retirement from the University of Western Sydney in 2004 she took up a new career as a literary translator, mostly working for Lontar Foundation in Jakarta and the Ubud Readers and Writers Festival Emerging Writers Program. She has translated several novels and short story collections by some of Indonesia’s leading authors such as Hanna Rambé, Putu Oka Sukanta, NH Dini, Gus tf Sakai, Clara Ng, and Mona Sylviana. Many of her translations were showcased at the 2016 Frankfurt and 2019 London Book Fairs when Indonesia was the Market Focus country.
Her latest translation, an anthology of stories by Nukila Amal, will be published by Lontar in 2023.
Toni’s passion for translation and Indonesian literature led to founding Indolitclub in 2018 with former Lontar executive-director Kesty Pringgoharjono. Now a thriving forum of monthly Zoom discussions of selected bilingual texts, Indolitclub has attracted Indonesianists and authors from far and wide.
