Dr. Renate Birkenhauer studied linguistics and literature; PhD with a focus on lexicography and poetics; Lectureship at the University of Tübingen.
Married to the translator and writer Klaus Birkenhauer, who co-founded the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium in Straelen in 1978 and headed it until 2001.
From 1983 to 2017 head of the Straelener ManuSkripte Verlag, which specialized in bilingual editions of international poetry, dictionaries and books on the art of translation (own title: "NS-Deutsch"). Participation in two large dictionary projects.
Since 2005 Vice-President of the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium in Straelen.
